‘African Diaspora and Creolité: Convergences and Divergences’. 04-05 Febuary 2007. Mauritius}}

The conference 'African Diaspora and Creolité: Convergences and Divergences' will focus on theories and discourses produced under the rubrics 'African Diaspora' and 'Creolité' and also explore potential intersections between the two. Both of these concepts were created to describe processes of inter-cultural exchange and identity formation in societies that emerged from European systems of slavery. They have also been constituted in the wake of emancipation and postcolonialism as responses to Euro-centric discourses of modernity and nationalism. However, their different theoretical foundations have generated two divergent trajectories.

The first objective of this conference is to interrogate the separate evolutions and possible interfaces between these two concepts, especially as they relate to the social realities that emanated from the trade in African slaves and chattel slavery. The second objective is to provide a forum in which scholars from various national milieu can discuss contemporary issues related to these societies. This conference is expected to be the starting point for the development of a new problematic that elaborates the relationship between discourses of the African diaspora and Creolité. The ultimate aim is to develop new conceptual frameworks and theoretical tools for the study of 'plural' societies and identities.

{{Venue}}

The Indian Ocean island of Mauritius is an ideal venue for this conference. In this location, the semantic relation between the terms 'African diasporan' and 'Creole' tends to be unstable, however the two expressions are used often as total or partial synonyms. The commemoration of the abolition of slavery in Mauritius on February 1, 2008, represents a pertinent context to gather scholars of both academic trends.
