{Il faut savoir réagir lorsque notre héritage, même en partie, est ridiculisé, surtout dans le milieu professionnel. C'est ce qu'a dû faire récemment Fabian Pierre, un Batazendien (Dougla) Triinidadien qui travaille sur la chaine TV6 là-bas... Il est évident qu'avec un tel comportement, la Ms. Stuart n'irait pas très loin à l'Île Maurice, ou aux Antilles. Cette barbarie ayant déjà pratiquement disparu chez nous...} {{J.S. S.}}
I wish to report a disturbing incident of racial discrimination in the TV6
Newsroom.The said incident took place between 6:45 p.m. and 7:10 p.m.
Wednesday January 16th.
I was sitting at my desk, when Sharmilla Persad's cell phone rang. Its
ringtone is a Hindi song with the words "I love you Janaa".
I made a comment that I liked the song. Charlene Stuart, who was next to me
and heard the ring, proceeded to express her annoyance with the song , and
then made the specific comment "But anyway, anything Indian is off anyhow
you take it."
This prompted laughter from fellow reporters (and Ms Stuart's friends)
Alisha Nurse and Karen Cozier-Phillip.
The statement by Ms Stuart along with the subsequent laughter was made
loudly, and in the presence of Ms. Persad.
I find this to be in clear violation of company policy on discriminatory
statements and/or practices as per the CCN Group of Companies Employee
Handbook..Section H-12..which deals with Key Policies regarding Harassment.
This section notes that:
"CCN will not, under any circumstances, condone or tolerate conduct that
may constitute harassment. It is our policy that all employees have the
right to work in an environment free from any tpe of illegal
discrimination.
"Harassment is a deliberate course of behaviour or conduct, verbal or
physical, which displas hostility towards an individual because of that
person's race, skin, colour religion, gender, national origin, age or
disability that:
· Has the purpose or effect of creating an intimindating, hostile or
offensive work environment
· Has the purpose or effect of unreasonabl interfering with an
employee's performance
· Harassment conduct includes epithets, slurs, negative stereotyping
hostile acts that relates torace, colour, religion, gender, etc."
I must say I found this comment by Ms Stuart and subsequent laughter by Ms
Nurse and Ms Cozier Phillip to also offend my own heritage, as I am mixed
with Indo-Trinidadian.
As per my duties as an employee executing and/or maintaining company
policy, I am filing this report for further action.
The attack was unprovoked, and unnecessary. Please feel free to contact me
for any further information.
Sincerely
Fabian Pierre
