Translating Voices From a Drum (Earl G.Long)

Translation is not only the passage from one language to another one; it’s the passage from the inner world of the source-language from the inner world of the target-language. But basically, what paths are we following to translation? How do we manage to overcome or to get round the obstacles on which we are struck over while plotting the inner-world of the source-language in the words of the target-language?

Undertaking to translate Voices From a Drum, we wondered whether a Caribbean translator working on a Caribbean novel was able to preserve his entire objectivity. It’s obvious that they both share a common part of their common inner worlds because of the similar schemes of construction of their societies. But the Caribbean translator is confronted with some problems and his main challenge is to operate between all the languages used in the Caribbean.
