Dear friends,

Below, you’ll find a link to a petition addressed to Louisiana’s congressmen to support adding an extra box(es) for Louisiana’s Creole and Cajun populations on all legal forms and documents to properly mark our ethnic/cultural affiliation.

This is very important for several reasons. Two of those reasons which are paramount are:

1.) Cultural recognition: For a very long time, Louisiana Creoles and Cajuns have been ignored, forgotten, and our existence has been, all but, written out of history. In fact, Louisiana Creoles are often dubbed “Les Gens Oublié” or “The Forgotten People”. With the recent Louisiana Creole/Cajun 2010 Census campaign launched by the World Studies Institute, Louisiana Creoles and Cajuns have finally renewed their hope that their culture, language, and legacy will continue to survive. In order for this to happen in today’s society however, this will take more than our claim that we are who we are; we need to be recognized federally by the U.S. government . Since the 20th century or the prime of Americanization in Louisiana territory, the government has sought to place Louisiana Creoles and Cajuns in a black/white context, however this culture is far more advanced and complex than black/white. We are of a Latin culture, speaking latin-based languages (Louisiana French, Louisiana Creole, and Louisiana Spanish) with a separate culture distinct from Anglo-culture.

2.) Enumeration : The domestic, educational, and health situation of Louisiana’s Creole and Cajun population and diasporic populations thereof are distinct from the issues of other communities and/or populations found anywhere else in the U.S. In order to accurately target, account for, and deal with these hazardous matters, they must be examined and addressed separate from the issues of the larger category that we’ve continued to be placed in or from other populations that surround them.

*Again, these are just a couple of reasons why this movement is grave to Louisiana Creoles and Cajuns. We are a very important part of Louisiana’s history and feel that it is time we are recognized and counted for who we are. You do not have to be a Louisiana Creole or Cajun to rightfully sign this petition, just so long as you’re a concerned patron and supporter of this cause. Please forward this e-mail to any and everyone you feel may be interested, whether or not they identify with Louisiana Creole and/or Cajun culture.*
